Does sex sell?

May 5th 2008 19:47
I was walking around in a local book store where I found a book about how women make better sales-persons than men. I found other related books very interesting too, The Art of War for Woman, for example.

So what do you think? Do you find that you tip more at a restaurant to more attractive waiters or waitresses? Some studies say so.

What about stronger looking facial features getting men more promotions in the military?

How does this affect the job market? How much discrimination is going on out there to get better looking people into customer service positions?

Hello, Mr. Emry;

Observations like those in the books you cite are ridiculously simplistic. Demographically speaking, young pretty women with lots of cleavage will sell more drinks to men; hence the Hooters chain. Do they sell as many drinks to women? Gay men? Families? Couples? The preference at some establishments for older, motherly-looking waitresses/hostesses and older, distinguished-looking maitre d'hotels/hosts is no mistake, either. Just depends on who you are targeting. Youth, while beautiful to look at, doesn't project authority or experience.

As for the handsomer men being promoted more in the military, I give you Audie Murphy. Most decorated war hero in the U.S., looked like one of the freckled, jug-eared boys out of a Norman Rockwell painting, but handsome? Hardly.

sex does sell, I think, but I think the nefarious aspect of sex in advertising is that it makes us unreceptive to things without sex in them...

This post hits close to home for me, unfortunately. I agree with all comments posted so far. In a previous position, I was a business development regional manager for a consulting firm in New York. Since I rose up the ranks through hard work and persistence, I was well respected by the hundred or so consultants who I oversaw, and was looked upon as an image of inspiration. I was responsible for business development, recruiting, and operational management for the NY and NJ offices.

Sadly, a few members of the Senior Executive management favored new 'flavors of the month', who just happened to be young, fair-haired, attractive females. Now, don't get me wrong, I was treated very well because I made the company a lot of money and was considered to be at the top of the talent curve... but it was frustrating to see how these 'flavors of the month' were given positions at my level, with much less responsibility and accountability. So, while I had tremendous pressure to lead my sales efforts, meet my recruiting quotas, manage client needs, and maintain operational standards... they were only responsible for business development and client relations - yet they received more praise than I or my other peers did!

So why the shift in organizational direction? Well, coincidentally, senior executive positions were dominated by the 'good ole boys', and most of our clients were saturated with male leadership.

Still... I managed to exceed expectations, and finished my last year with the company like a champ. But, I was wise enough to know when it was time for me to seek a better opportunity.

So to wind up the long-winded comment... sex does sell in a male-dominated market, but it only sells to those too near-sighted to realize the true value of talent.

I am glad you stopped on by and contributed on this topic Metrodreams.

Your comment is exactly what I was thinking of the male dominated with bad decision making good ole boys club antics.
